Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals
Promoting Excellence in School Leadership
Congratulations to Cessilye Williams, Principal of the Year and Anita Stevens, Assistant Principal of the Year.
Welcome to the Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals website.
We are here to support and serve our membership in the greatest capacity possible, as it is our mission to promote excellence in school leadership. New research on measuring the impact of highly effective principals indicates that the key to student success is a great school, and the key to a great school is a great principal.
It is with tremendous humility and honor that I serve as your president. I believe strongly in the work we do. I know that it takes a principal, who is passionate, hard-working, humble and kind, to serve our schools best.
Wishing you all an amazing school year!
Mary McMahon, President

The role of the assistant principal has changed dramatically in the past decade as accountability and political pressure for all students to succeed at high levels have increased.
Being an assistant principal takes strong conviction, personal empowerment, and a willingness to seek out experiences beyond the school and district. APs must generate a positive energy that is so contagious that others are inspired to excel.
The NASSP/AASSP Assistant Principal of the Year program recognizes outstanding middle level and high school assistant principals, both in Alaska and nationally. The program annually honors secondary school assistant principals who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students as well as demonstrating exemplary contributions to the profession.
Are you, or do you know such an assistant principal? Nominations are now being accepted for the AASSP 2015 Alaska Assistant Principal of the Year. The Alaska APOY will go on to be considered for the NASSP 2015 National Assistant Principal of the Year.

This program is designed to recognize the outstanding leadership of active, front-line principals. Current members, family members, or the staff of the NASSP Board of Directors or State Executive Directors are ineligible.
NASSP must be notified immediately of any change in principalship status. Failure to notify NASSP could jeopardize a candidate’s eligibility for the national award.
Working in conjunction with AAESP, we will be heading to Juneau, March 26-28, to meet with our elected officials. Our legislative fly-in will address the numerous policies and funding venues being addressed during this session. Governor Parnell’s plan for funding private eduction with public funds makes this an especially critical time for AASSP and AAESP to be in Juneau. We believe that legislators really want to hear from educators. Your voice will be represented by State Coordinator Mario Gatto, President Rod Morrison, President-elect Mary McMahon, and me. Please review our joint educational resolutions, and contact us with any specific insights or concerns that you may have.
Please drop me a note at dgwk12@gmail.com
We look forward to representing YOU!
Sincerely,
Denise Greene-Wilkinson
